KEVIN ROBERTS

Everyone has a guilty viewing pleasure – something that may not be critically acclaimed, or may not be very ‘modern’ or avant garde (or even pc/woke).  Mine is Tulsa King.  Funded by Steve Burkle, created by Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, 1883, 1923) and starring Sylvester Stallone playing Rocky/Rambo/ and Sylvester Stallone in a suit – a NY mafia capo exiled to Tulsa (shades of Lillehammer).  Tongue in cheek, funny, great cast and great writing.  On Paramount+ in the US.

And Trudy’s is The White Lotus, Series 2.  Eye candy for the affluent.  On Sky in the UK, HBO in the US and Apple internationally.  Easy on the eye, easy on the mind and a great cast.

Now – my own favourites:

  • Inside Man – Netflix.  A Stanley Tucci quiet, characteristically understated performance as a prisoner on death row.  Balanced by an emotionally charged David Tennant as a UK vicar!  Limited series from BBC in the UK and Netflix internationally.
  • Slow Horses, Series 2 – Apple Original.  Even better than the addictive Series 1.  Slough House (Slow Horses – get it?), home of MI5 ‘embarrassments’.  A series of eight books (so far) by Mick Herron.  Jackson Lamb brilliantly played by Gary Oldman, with great support from Kristen Scott Thomas and Jack Lowden.  The best of British.
  • Another Taylor Sheridan / Dutton Family classic – Yellowstone going strong – Series 5.  1883 was brilliant with Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and the scene-stealing Isabel May.  And now 1923 with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren looking like the real Dutton deal.  Episodes 1 and 2 out – all on Paramount+ in the US.
  • And Gangs of London, Series 2.  A Sky Original in the UK, AMC+ in the US and Apple internationally.  Violent, explosive, riveting and brutal.

Next on the list – three Netflix shows to check out:

  • Top Boy,
  • Kaleidoscope,
  • The Recruit.

Along with Series 4 of Fauda – coming January 20th.

The Golden Age of Television Drama continues.
