The Peaky Buggers came together again in Beckwood last week (KR Connect March 19 and January 2, 2024).

We enjoyed an Indian Summer evening in the English Lakes overlooking Grasmere and the Lion and the Lamb.  Blue skies, autumn golds and a full moon on the day before the clocks went back in the UK combined to create a magical environment.  Nick and Sophie prepared and served a fantastic four-course Lancastrian dinner for the 19 of us, and we were all spoiled by the presence of the women behind the Peaky Buggers – aka the power behind the throne.  A splendid evening was enjoyed by all, with the old familiar stories getting told and retold with gusto (and with the usual substantial dollops of exaggeration, although remaining “true to actual events”!).  Two hours of Neil Diamond, The Ronettes, Shania Twain, The Beatles and The Boss In our new, redesigned karaoke studio topped off the evening unforgettably with memorable performances from Chris, Janet, Sally, Janice, Leslie, Elaine, Sandra and Helen.  DJ’ed and choreographed by Trudy and with guest vocals from Benny, Eric, Barry and Paul supported by Leszek, Brian, Roger, Phillip and Jim.  (Given my total lack of musical ability, I stayed in my own area of competence i.e. Head Barman.)

As midnight crept closer and carriages arrived to take those not staying in The Lakes back home, Sally was heard to say “nothing’s quite as much fun as getting smashed with friends when you’re as old as we are”.  (Actually that was a politically correct translation of her rather more colourful Lancastrian version.)  And we all shared the sentiment.

Live life to the max.  And keep making Happy Choices.
