Friday July 3rd – 5pm: Grounded at The Farm, looking forward to a quiet barbecue – just Trudy and me.
7.00pm: 103° – not the barbecue, just the New Jersey heat wave.
7.15pm: Storm clouds, rolling thunder in the distance, sky blackening.
7.45pm: All hell breaks loose. 80mph violent winds. Trees hammered. Stuff flying everywhere outside. Rain pouring down. Visibility zero.
8:00pm: All power cut. No lights, no AC, no internet.
Saturday July 4th – 5.15am: Still no power.
7.00am: The day dawns. Our land has been battered. We have lost over a dozen trees. The drive is blocked.
7:30am: We move over into Vanessa and Mark’s house which has power because they have an emergency generator which has kicked in.
150,000 homes in Morris County (where we live), have lost power. No immediate response on when this could be restored, given the priorities are more about resolving big safety hazards on railways, roads, etc. No barbecues.
